Dental Check-up
Most routine dental visits include basic teeth cleanings. During these appointments, the dental hygienist utilizes various metal and ultrasonic tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup from the patient's teeth and gum line. The hygienist typically works on one tooth at a time and may also perform interdental cleaning with floss. Patients wear a plastic or paper cloth over their chest for protection, and eye shields may also be provided.
After the cleaning, the dentist conducts a thorough examination. This involves checking for any pockets or gaps between the patient's teeth and gums. Occasionally, X-rays may be taken after the cleaning to detect any hidden or emerging issues.
“The hygienist will dedicate time to cleaning each tooth individually and may also floss in between them.”
Deep Cleaning
Deep cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, go beyond regular cleanings by addressing issues below the gumline. This procedure is crucial for treating gum disease. When plaque bacteria are not properly removed, they can cause inflammation of the gums and lead to gum recession.
This inflammation can create "pockets" between the gums and teeth, where more plaque can accumulate. This poses a risk of bone and tooth loss if left untreated. Deep cleaning is most effective in the early stages of gum disease, before irreversible damage to the structures supporting the teeth occurs. More advanced cases may require more intensive treatments.
“Deep cleanings, also referred to as scaling and root planing, take an extra step in targeting the area beneath the gumline.”
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a natural mineral that supports tooth health by strengthening enamel, preventing cavities, and combating harmful bacteria. It protects both gums and tooth enamel. Professional fluoride treatments provide patients with concentrated solutions that are significantly stronger than over-the-counter products.
The American Dental Association recommends that patients receive professional fluoride treatments every three, six, or 12 months, depending on their oral health needs. Certain individuals, such as those with infrequent professional dental care, regular drug or alcohol use, poor oral hygiene, unhealthy diet, or weak enamel, may benefit from more frequent fluoride treatments to reduce cavity risk.
"Professional fluoride treatments offer patients highly concentrated solutions that are more potent than those available over the counter."
Dental Sealants & Basic Teeth Whitening
Dental sealants are effective in preventing tooth decay, particularly on the back teeth (premolars and molars). During the procedure, a thin plastic coating (the sealant) is applied by the dentist to the chewing surfaces of the patient's teeth. The sealant then bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth to protect the enamel. While brushing and flossing adequately clean the tooth surfaces, they may not effectively remove food and plaque from deeper crevices. Sealants help seal off these vulnerable areas, making them particularly beneficial for individuals prone to or already experiencing tooth decay. They can also benefit adults with healthy teeth or existing fillings.
For those interested in enhancing their smile, basic teeth whitening is an option to consider. While numerous over-the-counter products are available, the most effective whitening treatments are administered in a dental office. These products are medical-grade, offering higher concentrations that deliver superior results compared to whitening toothpaste. In-office whitening procedures can achieve results up to eight times brighter. Generally, this treatment is suitable for patients with healthy teeth and gums and no fillings, though our team can assess and advise on options for those who may not meet these criteria.
"Sealants are effective in sealing off these areas, making them particularly beneficial for individuals who already have or are prone to tooth decay."
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is utilized by practitioners to enhance a patient's smile by applying a tooth-colored resin material to the tooth, which is then hardened using a special light to bond it to the teeth. This procedure can improve both the appearance and function of the teeth, and is often a more convenient and cost-effective option compared to other cosmetic dental procedures.
Examples of situations where dental bonding may be used by a dentist include:
- Repairing chipped, cracked, or decayed teeth
- Protecting exposed tooth roots due to receding gums
- Reducing the appearance of tooth discoloration
- Closing gaps between teeth or enhancing tooth length
- Reshaping teeth for improved aesthetics
