Details on the Training and Certification Process for Dental Hygienists
To become a dental hygienist, individuals must first complete a college program in dental hygiene. This program can result in an associate degree at a community college, a bachelor's degree at a four-year university, or a graduate degree. Admission to these programs typically requires a background in high school science courses.
Following the completion of academic coursework, dental hygienist candidates must participate in supervised clinical experience with patients. Upon finishing the program, dental hygienists must obtain their state license to practice. Some states also mandate that candidates pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam, as per the American Dental Association.
"Once the academic college-level courses are finished, dental hygienist candidates must undergo a supervised clinical experience with patients."
How Dental Hygienists Help With Patient Screening
During regular check-ups and cleanings, dental hygienists play a crucial role in assisting the dentist by conducting patient screenings for various conditions. They evaluate the patient's oral health using the periodontal chart to assess the risk of gum disease. Additionally, they inquire about any other health concerns or chronic conditions the patient may have.
In some cases, dental hygienists also conduct cancer screenings, including oral cancer, during the examination. They thoroughly examine the head, jaw, and neck to identify any potential issues. X-rays of the teeth and mouth may also be taken by dental hygienists to detect cavities or other oral problems.

Recommendations and Documentation
"Keeping accurate records allows providers to track potential issues."
Patients being treated by a Dental Hygienist
- Health History: Before beginning any examination or cleaning, the dental hygienist will first review the patient's health history. The dental provider will then review the patient's dental records and health information. After that, the provider may address any concerns the patient has before moving on to the next step of the appointment.
- Teeth Cleaning: Following the health history review, the dental hygienist will proceed with cleaning the teeth. They will use a professional polisher to remove any build-up and stains on the enamel, as well as tools to remove tartar and plaque from the teeth and gum line.
- Fluoride Treatment: During a routine visit, some dental hygienists may offer preventative services such as fluoride treatment to maintain healthy and strong teeth. Additionally, dental sealant application may be included in the routine appointment to prevent tooth decay.
